DESCRIPTION The Yonsei University College of Medicine was first founded in 1885 by an American missionary named Horace N. Allen, who was serving as the official medical doctor for the American diplomatic delegation which had recently established its consulate in Korea. When traditional Korean medicine could not could cure Min’s wound, Allen intervened and saved the young nobleman. This incident earned Allen the trust of King Kojong, the ruling king of Korea and the rest of the palace. Later, when King Kojong asked Allen what he wished to have, Allen requested a hospital where he could practice modern medicine. As a result, the King credit Allen and Severance Hospital for introducing both modern medicine and protestant Christianity to Korea. This first modern medical institution also served as the Korea’s first medical school. The name of Chejungwon was later changed to “Severance Hospital” when Dr. Oliver Avison, the fourth director of the hospital, traveled to the U.S. and convinced a U.S. entrepreneur, Louis Severance, to donate funds to establish Korea’s first modern hospital building. Louis Severance donated 10,000 US dollars in 1904, which contributed to the establishment of the new hospital and the old Severance Hospital was located near the Seoul Train Station.

Shortly after the Korean War, in 1957, Severance and Yeonhui College (Chosun Christian College in English) merged to become Yonsei University, which is a combination of the first syllables of the two institutions’ names. And Severance Hospital and the college of medicine moved to current place, of Sinchon. Since the graduation of first medical doctors in 1907, Yonsei has been one of the best medical school of Korea in education, as well as in health care services and biomedical researches.

For example, in 2004, Yonsei reorganized its medical education curriculum into a long-term and system-centered system, in line with the paradigm shift in global medical education. The school also introduced a new comprehensive approach to education, with a stronger focus on performance, research, and students. The educational innovations continued and in 2014, outcome based evaluation system (compared to relative evaluation system) was introduced, with the expectations of student-centered, outcome-based, research-oriented and integrated (SORI) medical education. The leaderships of school are ever committed to education in medical education research, administrations, and mobilising professors.

By changing the relative evaluation system into an absolute evaluation system, Yonsei University College of Medicine sought to create a more cooperative atmosphere for students, rather than competition, and also introduced a developmental test to test students’ growth. In addition, to create a new culture that encourages learning, we institutionalized a learning community and provided steady mentoring from professors for a more self-reflective learning culture.

To foster transformational leadership in students, we have developed and implemented a performance-based curriculum, and offer a six-year curriculum that focuses on strengthening students’ research skills so they can become excellent medical scientists. We also have a curriculum on humanities and social medicine, which is a well-balanced combination of medicine, medical practice, and liberal arts.

We also have a systematic program on teaching and development to help our instructors grow their educational capacity. And, in the Department of Medicine, we have created a full-time educational curriculum based on residential college (RC), and have activated various non-major classes to cultivate creativity and flexible thinking in students.

As mentioned above, Yonsei University College of Medicine has continuously worked to learn and apply the latest trends in medical education, and we will always strive to become a leader in medical education in Korea and around the world.
