Symposium 11 Medical Humanities and Ethics in the Curriculum - Standards and Best Practices
Introduction Factual knowledge and competence are not enough. To function in society, the doctor must have understanding and practical wisdom about the social, ethical, legal and anthropological setting of the physician.
  • This is much more than the importance of social accountability.
  • It is not difficult to create a programme of medical education that meets the need to know and understand the relevant factual knowledge and competencies.
  • It is more complex to devise the curriculum for the social sciences and humanities in medicine, and for the accreditation process to verify that this curriculum and its delivery are appropriate for the doctor we need in the future.
